- You must first determine the stud spacing, and install them at 450mm intervals to match domestic gypsum board standards (900mm] in order to reduce material loss and ensure structural strength.
- Since runners (tracks] are fixed to the floor and ceiling and serve as rails for vertical columns, they are calculated by multiplying the wall length by 2. For sites with many curves, it is safe to allow a generous markup rate of at least 10%.
- Since openings for doors or windows require overlapping studs or separate reinforcement to withstand the impact of opening and closing, please secure additional reinforcing materials beyond the calculated quantity.
- High walls with a ceiling height exceeding 3m are vulnerable to vibration, so the stud width must be widened to 75mm or more or the thickness increased, and if sound insulation is important, double studs and additional sound-absorbing material must be considered.
- Since the small detail of consistently aligning the drilled holes of the studs determines the wiring efficiency of subsequent electricians, checking the direction of the studs before installation is essential for a professional finish.

Calculation formula for light steel material requirements
When constructing partition walls on-site, the material quantity is not calculated based solely on the area. The spacing of the studs and the amount of reinforcement required for openings (doors/windows] must all be taken into account.
1. Calculation of Basic Stud Quantity (Studs]
Divide the total length of the wall by the stud spacing, add one starting point column, and apply the markup rate.
2. Calculation of Opening Reinforcement Quantity
For areas where doors or windows are installed, the left and right sides must be overlapped or additional reinforcement must be added, so the reinforcement quantity is increased.
3. Calculation of total runner (track] length
The runners, which are fixed to the floor and ceiling and serve as rails for the studs, take twice the length of the wall.
Detailed Guide to Calculator Input Items
Please enter the site dimensions into the input fields to ensure accurate quantity calculation.
-
1. Wall length
This is the total horizontal length where the partition wall will be installed. Please measure accurately using a spirit level or tape measure.
-
2. Wall height
It is the vertical height from the floor to the ceiling slab (or ceiling tile].
-
3. Stud spacing
Select 450mm or 600mm depending on structural stability.
-
4. Number of openings
This is the total number of doors or windows to be installed in the middle of the wall. It is required for calculating reinforcement materials.
-
5. Surcharge rate
This is a margin to cover cutting losses. We generally recommend 5–10% depending on the difficulty of the site.
Lightweight Steel Construction Standards and Recommended Dimensions
Stud spacing varies depending on the gypsum board specifications and wall strength requirements. Please refer to the standard specification table below.
Since domestic gypsum boards are 900mm wide, you must set the spacing to 450mm so that 3 studs are accurately placed per board to reduce waste.
Essential Checklist for Fail-Free Construction
These are practical points to keep in mind when cutting and securing materials on-site.
-
Reinforcement of door frames for openings
For areas where doors or windows are installed, reinforce them by overlapping studs on both sides of the opening or inserting timber to withstand the impact of opening and closing.
-
Check verticality with laser level
Before fixing the runners, you must use a laser level to ensure that the upper and lower sections of the floor and ceiling are accurately vertical.
-
Securing wire and piping routes
If the direction of the drilled holes in the middle of the studs is set consistently, subsequent electricians can easily pull out the wires, improving work efficiency.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ]
- Q. What is the difference between studs and runners?
- A. Runners are horizontal materials fixed to the floor and ceiling to serve as rails, and studs are vertical column materials erected between those rails.
- Q. The floor height is over 3 meters; is it okay to use standard studs?
- A. As floor height increases, it becomes more vulnerable to vibration, so it is recommended to widen the stud width to 75mm or more, increase the thickness, and narrow the spacing.
- Q. How do you calculate walls with doors?
- A. Enter the number of doors in the opening quantity field of the calculator. Approximately 2 to 3 additional studs are calculated per door for reinforcement.
